Neymar scores 100th career goal on birthday

Venezuela Star (IANS) Monday 6th February, 2012

Santos star striker Neymar scored his 100th career goal on his 20th birthday but it did not ensure victory for his side.

The highly anticipated goal came in the 70th minute as team mate Paulo Henrique Ganso drove a free kick from the lower left side of the field towards the front of the Palmeiras net. Neymar leaped into the air and headed the ball past keeper Deola before starting to celebrate.

Despite Neymar's historic goal Sunday, he was unable to help Santos as Palmeiras rallied to win 2-1 in the fifth round of the Sao Paulo state championship, Xinhua reported.

Neymar has scored 82 goals with Santos while his other 18 were scored with the Brazilian national youth and senior teams.

With a contract valid until July 2014, Neymar has high hopes of establishing new records with Santos.
