British football legend Sir Bobby Charlton had surgery yesterday after he fell ill before an awards bash.

The England 1966 World Cup winner and Manchester United hero had a gallstone removed.

Sir Bobby, 74, was to collect a lifetime achievement gong at the Laureus World Sports Awards in London on Monday, the Sun reports.

But a statement from Laureus said: "Sir Bobby felt unwell on Sunday and returned to Manchester earlier today for minor surgery."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Sir Bobby is fine. He is very annoyed not to be here to receive this award. I'll be taking the statuette back to Old Trafford for him."

Sir Bobby was admitted to hospital on the 54th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.

He survived the plane crash that left 23 people dead, including eight United team-mates. (ANI)
