Rooney backs Redknapp for England job

Venezuela Star (ANI) Thursday 9th February, 2012

Ace striker Wayne Rooney has backed Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp to be the new England manager after Fabio Capello resigned over the Football Association's decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.

Capello's resignation was confirmed just hours after his likely successor Harry Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion charges.

Rooney took to Twitter to add his voice to the growing support for Redknapp to be installed as Capello's replacement.

"Gutted Capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be English to replace him. Harry Redknapp for me," Rooney tweeted.

But former Manchester United captain Roy Keane claimed it wasn't Rooney's place to say who he wanted to take over, the Daily Mail reports.

"Wayne should keep his nose out of it. He didn't do enough on the pitch when Capello was manager. Wayne should concentrate on being a player and not on who he wants as England manager," he said.

Keane admitted: "Harry Redknapp will be the clear favourite to get the job and I'm sure he'll be the fans' favourite."

England legend Paul Gascoigne also gave his backing to Redknapp as Capello's successor, but claimed that former England boss Terry Venables should be offered the job if the Football Association could not get the Spurs manager. (ANI)
